The capacity of this stadium is 30000, and the inaugural one-day international (ODI) match was played between Sri Lanka and England in March 2000. Dambulla an agricultural trading town also famous for its ancient UNESCO protected Buddhist Cave Temples which date back to 85 B.C.

In the inaugural match Sri Lanka beat England by five wickets. During that time Graham Thorp was the captain of England team. In other match at 2003 between England and Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka beat England by 10 wickets. So the winning records of Sri Lanka are best.
