Honda Motor Thailand started selling Honda CITY subcompact

On September 10, 2008, Honda Motor Company’s Thailand subsidiary Honda Automobile (Thailand) Co. Ltd. started the sales of its CITY. The first generation Honda CITY was introduced in 1996. With its rising popularity, CITY has become one of the core models of Honda Motor Company like Civic, Accord, CR-V and Jazz (Fit). The car sales crossed one million in late May 2008. Today it is produced in Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, India, Pakistan, China, and Turkey. People of 39 nations ride the CITY. Honda is now planning to expand CITY sales in growing auto markets. Honda Automobile (Thailand) Co. Ltd. is planning to support the startup production in China and India.

The current CITY is the third generation of CITY sub-compact sedan. It has better interior space that would give the passengers an open and secure feeling. The CITY is run by 1.5 liter i-VTEC engine. In edition, the car has all the upgraded safety equipments and very much fuel efficient.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard thinks Liverpool needs to take some risks to win the early kick off against Manchester United on Saturday. "Over the last couple of years we've gone into games against United and Chelsea very organised tactically - defensive if you like - and still lost 1-0." Gerrard said.

However, Liverpool has got to contend with some major injury woes ahead of the much-waited showdown with Manchester United. Two of the key players: Captain Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres- are doubtful for the match as both of them are out of action with injury. Steven Gerrard has undergone a surgery to shake off his hamstring injury and missed England’s opening two world cup qualifiers. However, he is not yet confirmed for the match because it might a bit early to feature him in the heat of premier league. However, Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez said he would need to take a last-minute decision on this regard and he is not worried about the injuries of two important players of the squad.

However, the good thing is that Ryan Gigg is expected to be back in action after recovering his hamstring twinge that he picked up during United’s 1-1 draw with Newcastle United at home last month in their opening match in premier league this season. Rio Ferdinand is also fit for the match after shaking off his neck and back injuries that kept him out of England’s opening world cup qualifier against Andorra, but the United defender took part England’s 4-1 stunning victory over Croatia.

Giggs has been suffering with a hamstring twinge since the Newcastle match on August 17. The 34-year-old Welshman came off against Kevin Keegan's side when he felt a tightening in his hamstring to limit any damage.

Carrick had to pull out of the England squad after he suffered an ankle injury in the 1-1 draw with Newcastle, but is now expected to be available.

Liverpool picked up seven points from three matches and currently stands right behind leader Chelsea on goal difference. Manchester United did not have a good start as they could manage to clinch 4 points so far with a match at hand.

India auto market: Four wheelers are suffering but two wheelers are shining

The Indian auto industry is observing a downward trend in sales for two consecutive moths for the first time in last three years. In August, the sales went down by 4.36%.

According to the data of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) in the August of 2007, the sales of domestic passenger cars stood 98,893 units which became 94,584 units at present. Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. and Tata Motors are the two major companies suffering the sales slump.

In August, sales of Maruti Suzuki cars went down by 10.07% to 46, 811 units compared to 52,055 units in 2007. Tata Motors saw a sales slump of 10.10% to 12,216 units compared to 13,588 units in 2007.

The only exceptional is Hyundai Motor India Limited. The South Korean auto maker is observing an impressive growth. The Hyundai i10 sales observed a growth of 34.08% at 21,067 units compared to 16,115 units in 2007.

Analysts are saying that the sales slump is caused by auto makers’ inability to compromise with the ongoing financial pressure and high interest rates. As the festive season is coming, automakers are expecting better sales in the coming month.

Sales of two-wheeled vehicles on the other hand went up by 15.9% in August. The August bike sales saw an increase of 28.53% at 2,84,752 units compared to 4,18,702 units in 2007. Hero Honda single handedly caused a huge turn around in the two-wheel market.

Indian Hotels Co., Ltd. is launching "Gateway" brand

On September 11, 2008, Indian Hotels Co. Ltd.,(BOM:500850) a subsidiary of Tata group announced to a launch a new brand called “Gateway.” Under the new brand, 50 properties will be included in the next three years. The company already has two other luxury brands: Ginger and Taj.

Raymond Bickson, Managing Director, Indian Hotel Co. Ltd., told reporters, that sixteen properties of the “Taj brand” would be included to the new brand and ten more have been signed up. Officials are negotiating for another fifteen. He also added that the leisure segment in the country is growing at a healthy pace and the new brand would target the emerging guest profile.

The new brand will be included in the luxury segment and room charge would be the same to those of the Taj Brand depending on the location. The hotels will have special menus for health conscious consumers and other round the clock facilities like laundry, in-house dining. The company is going to invest Rs. 4-5 million per room.
